Spotify Wants AI Agents to Choose It as Their Music Service

On October 22, 2026, on Spotify’s third-quarter earnings call, co-CEO Gustav Söderström described a new bet: Spotify wants to be the music service that AI agents turn to. According to Music Ally’s report of the call, he said Spotify is now an agent that users can talk to, ask questions of and instruct, inside the app and through other companies’ agents.
What Spotify said
- Spotify describes itself as an “intelligent media service” that works as an agent in its own app and inside other agents. It is betting that people will use many agents, and wants to be the strongest source of licensed content across them.
- It already integrates with ChatGPT, Claude and Meta’s Muse assistant. TechCrunch reports it was the first music service to integrate with Muse.
- On data, Spotify says it does not send music or user data to partners. The outside agent makes a request, and Spotify’s own systems decide what plays.
- Söderström said listening is not moving to other agents.
Spotify is now an agent.
The numbers behind it
TechCrunch reports 788 million monthly active users and revenue of nearly €5 billion for the quarter. A MarketBeat summary of the call adds 306 million premium subscribers, revenue up 14% in constant currency, operating income of €672 million, and a Q4 outlook of 818 million users and 316 million subscribers. What analysts asked
Rich Greenfield of LightShed Partners asked whether agents could compare prices, switch services or cancel unused subscriptions, and whether Spotify could become an “interchangeable back-end pipe.” Söderström replied that Spotify will not bet on customers forgetting about their subscription.
What it can mean for an independent artist
None of the coverage mentions artists or royalties, so this section is our reading, not Spotify guidance. If listeners start asking an assistant for “music for a run” or “something calm for studying,” a track has to be findable by description. These are things within an artist’s control:
- Metadata. Check the genre, mood, language and credits you deliver with each release. Wrong or empty fields make a track harder to match.
- Your profile. Claim and complete your Spotify for Artists profile: bio, photos, links and playlists you curate.
- Context around the song. Lyrics, credits and a clear release page give a human or an agent more to work with.
- Wait for specifics. This is a strategy statement from one earnings call. How artists are discovered, credited or paid through agents has not been described yet.
If a release is coming up and its metadata and assets are not organized, that is part of what we help put in order.
