Audit What You Already Have

Step 3 of 30 of the free guide Visual Identity for Musicians: Audit What You Already Have

You already have a visual identity. It may be accidental, but it exists. This step puts all of it on one screen so you can see it the way a stranger does.

Collect everything

Take screenshots, do not rely on memory. Using the list from step 2, capture:

  • Your profile picture and banner on each platform
  • Your last three covers
  • Your last nine posts as they appear in the grid
  • The photos you send when someone asks for material
  • Your latest poster or flyer
  • A frame from your most recent video

Drop all of it on one page. A slide, a blank document, a free whiteboard app, anything where you can see everything at once.

Look for three things

What repeats. A color that keeps coming back, a kind of light, a way of standing in photos. Repeats are the beginning of an identity, even when nobody planned them.

What fights. The cover in pastel next to the poster in neon. Three different ways of writing your name. A profile photo from four years ago beside this year’s music.

What is missing. No horizontal photo. No version of your name on a transparent background. No image that works small.

Look for what does not belong with the rest, even when it is the prettiest thing on the page.

Be specific

“It looks messy” is not a finding. “My name is written four different ways” is a finding, and you can fix it in step 9.

Write findings as plain facts. Count things. How many typefaces? How many dominant colors? How many of your photos are from the last year?

Keep the page

This page is your before. At the end of the guide you will make the same page again and compare them. The difference is the point of the whole exercise.

Do this now

Build the page, then write three lists under it: repeats, fights, missing. Three to five lines each. Twenty minutes is enough.

An outside eye sees what you no longer notice. If you want one on your project, that is something we do.
