Make Your Instagram Grid a Front Door

Step 22 of 30 of the free guide Visual Identity for Musicians: Make Your Instagram Grid a Front Door

When someone taps through to your Instagram profile, they glance at the top of the grid for a few seconds and decide what this is, long before reading any post. Those first nine squares are a front door.

What a stranger should get in five seconds

Three answers, without opening anything:

  1. This is a music project, and this is the person or band
  2. It looks roughly like this, and so probably sounds like this
  3. Something is happening: a release, a show, new work

If the first nine squares are all text flyers, answer one is missing. If they are nine selfies, answer three is missing.

Mix three kinds of post

A three by three grid mixing portraits, artwork and text announcements in one palette, with a legend explaining the three kinds of post

  • You: photos and video covers where a person is clearly visible
  • The work: cover art, stills from videos, the stage, the studio
  • The news: announcements made in your template, with dates and releases

No strict pattern is needed. Checkerboards and perfectly alternating rows are fragile, because one off-plan post breaks them. Aim for a rough balance in any nine.

What makes it one grid

The mix holds together through the decisions from earlier steps: the palette, one photo edit, two typefaces, the small detail from step 10. With those in place, very different posts still look like neighbors.

Video matters here too. A Reel shows in the grid as its cover frame. Choose that frame on purpose and check the square crop, or the grid fills with blurry mid-motion faces.

The grid is judged as one image. Each post is a tile in it.

Plan before posting

Lay out the next six to nine posts in a planning app or a simple folder and look at them together. Move them around until no two similar tiles sit side by side. This takes ten minutes and prevents most regrets.

Pin what matters

Pinned posts stay at the top. Use them for the current release, your best live or video moment, and a post that tells a newcomer who you are.

Do not confuse the door with the house

A tidy grid gets people through the door. What keeps them is the music and whether you show up regularly. Coherent is enough. The grid has no need to be a work of art.

Do this now

Screenshot your top nine squares and check the three answers. Then plan your next six posts so that the mix evens out.

We plan the content around a release so the profile reads as one project. Here is how.
